Remodel for Efficiency Project
Joshua Tree, San Bernardino County, California
The existing library and a student service building at Copper Mountain College will be remodeled for efficiency. Earth Systems Southwest personnel provided geotechnical engineering services related to the “remodel for efficiency” project. The remodel may include additions that may be supported by conventional shallow continuous or pad footings.
For this project our scope of services included site reconnaissance, subsurface exploration, laboratory testing, review of published technical literature pertaining to the site and previous reports prepared for Copper Mountain College by our firm, and engineering analysis and evaluation. We provided recommendations regarding site development and grading criteria, structure foundation type and design, foundation bearing capacity and total and differential settlements, concrete slabs-on-grade, mitigation of the potential corrosivity of site soils to concrete and steel reinforcement, seismic design parameters, and preliminary pavement structural sections. Construction is expected to begin in January of 2009.

New Electrical Building and Bookstore
Joshua Tree, San Bernardino County, California
A new electrical building and bookstore have been built on the campus of Copper Mountain College. The electrical building is a 3,200-square foot structure with an attached paved yard; the bookstore is a 2,100-square foot building with a covered patio area. Site development included site grading, building pad preparation, underground utility installation, and concrete pavement and sidewalks placement.
Earth Systems Southwest personnel performed a geotechnical engineering investigation and seismic hazards study for the project. We provided geotechnical recommendations that were incorporated in the final design and construction.
