Edwards Air Force Base, Palmdale
Projects for which our firm has provided services at Edward's Air Force Base east of Palmdale include the Rockwell Anechoic Facility, the Northrup B-2 Facility, and Taxiway and Runway Expansion. The Rockwell project consists of an anechoic chamber constructed within a new hanger, and includes an 80-foot diameter floor-level turntable capable of supporting a fully loaded military aircraft for testing, and a two-story underground equipment vault. The Northrop facility consists of several structures of concrete slab-on-grade construction with utility tunnels and trenches. Extensive subsurface exploration was performed; over 90 exploratory borings were drilled and sampled. A downhole seismic shear wave survey was conducted to provide earthquake design data. For the Taxiway and Runway Expansion, we performed field plate load tests, and drilled and sampled to characterize the soils and hazardous materials. Recommendations for taxiway and runway expansion were provided.

Vandenberg Air Force Base, Santa Barbara County
The Vandenberg Air Force Base encompasses approximately 70 square miles of coastal terrain in the Santa Barbara County of California. Our firm has conducted geotechnical engineering investigations at this military facility for numerous projects including the Cypress Ridge Launch Facility, SLC 4-E Roadways and Cable Tunnels, and Capehart Military Family Housing. Cypress Ridge was designed to be a launch pad flanked by two Stack and Checkout Facilities with an Operations Support Building. SLC 4-E Roadways and Cable Tunnels is part of the Titan IV launch program. Our investigation determined if the existing roads would support the loaded upgraded solid rocket motor transporter and if existing subterranean cable tunnels would be overstressed by the additional loads. We provided services for two phases of the Capehart Military Family Housing: Phase I is 166 units of one- and two-story wood-frame construction, and Phase II entailed the demolition of 128 structures and the construction of 128 new residences. We have also provided testing and inspection services for projects such as the HAVE Stare Antenna Facility, the MAB Building, the Missile Crew Training Facility, and the Peacekeeper Rail Garrison.
