Geology and Hydrogeology Services

An increasing awareness of environmental issues and the
trend to develop more geologically challenging sites, continues to augment the role of the geologic sciences in engineering evaluations.

Down-hole Logging in Landslide Area

Geologic Hazards Studies

Geologic hazards studies are conducted to evaluate and define the geologic conditions and potential geologic hazards associated with site development.
Tasks involved include:

  • excavation and logging of exploratory trenches,
  • review of regional and local geologic structure and stratigraphy,
  • review of stereo photographs to observe topographic and geomorphic features related to faulting,
  • analyses of resulting data,
  • development of conclusions and recommendations related to geologic considerations.

Geologic Bluff Studies

Geologic bluff studies are conducted to provide an overview of the geologic conditions along coastlines and their associated erosion characteristics.  Task involved include:

  • site reconnaissance,
  • geologic mapping,
  • research of available reports, survey maps and photographs,
  • estimation of historic, current and future bluff erosion retreat rates,
  • evaluation of bluff stratigraphy including structural characteristics such as bedding, jointing, and folding, evaluation of bluff stability,
  • evaluation of the effects of sea wave erosion,
  • and development of conclusions and recommendations such as appropriate building setbacks, rip-rap placement, and seawall construction.

Landslide Analyses

Landslide analyses tasks include:

    • subsurface exploration and
      geologic mapping to define the
      limits and geometry of the landslides,
    • downhole logging to determine
      the stability of hillside areas,
    • slope inclinometers may be installed,
    • a monitoring program may be established to continually
      assess the slope stability
      of the landslide areas.

Hydrogeologic Studies

Our Professional Geologists and Hydrogeologists are experienced in the evaluation of geologic and hydrogeologic conditions.  These evaluations are performed using a mix of field and office research activities to provide a cost-effective means of identifying and quantifying groundwater resources, including potable water supplies and certification of "mountain spring water."

Our hydrogeologic services may include:

  • evaluations of groundwater resources,
  • identifying the source, age, and purity of the water;
  • quantifying the water volume available at a particular location;
  • assessing the geologic and hydrogeologic conditions affecting groundwater occurrence and flow;
  • developing programs to increase the availability of the resource for economic use;
  • identifying risks to the resource from activities in the site vicinity;
  • developing dewatering plans and monitoring dewatering activities,
  • aquifer testing and analysis, and
  • spring certification studies.
